During Milan Fashion Week, Armani slammed gender-focused marketing.
Giorgio Armani on Friday accused the fashion industry of “raping” women with fleeting trends and sex-driven marketing.
“I think it’s time for me to say what I’m thinking. Women continue to be raped by designers, ”Armani, 85, told reporters on the sidelines of a show for his Emporio Armani line at Milan Fashion Week.
“If a woman walks down the street and sees an advertisement with a woman with her breasts and ass in full view and she wants to be like that too, that’s one way to rape her,” Armani said. “You can rape a woman in several ways, either by throwing her in the basement or by suggesting that she dress a certain way.”
Armani, known for his understated and elegant outfits, founded his label in 1975 and made it a global brand.
“In my show, there are short skirts, long skirts, loose and tight pants. I gave maximum freedom to women who can use all possibilities if they are sensible, ”he said.
“I’m sick of hearing the word ‘trend’. We must try to work for the woman of today. There shouldn’t be any trends, ”he said.
He said his show Emporio Armani, his younger line, was inspired by “strong” young women.
On Sunday, he will present the Fall / Winter 2020 collection of his main line Giorgio Armani.
