American Fashion: The Return of the Met Gala | Opinion

In a world clouded by tragedy, events such as the Met Gala offer an escape through their celebration of tailoring and self-expression. After a year of absence due to the pandemic, the iconic Met Gala returned on September 13.

This extravagant occasion usually takes place every year on the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Guests are expected to dress in a manner aligned with a predetermined theme.

Besides the Met Gala being an evening dedicated to honoring the most popular names in fashion, it is a charity event that raises funds for the museum.

This year’s theme was “In America: A Fashion Lexicon,” commemorating America’s most prestigious designers. According to a Vogue interview with American fashion journalist and former Vogue Creative Director Andre Leon Talley, “Everyone comes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual fundraising gala.”

The event celebrated the Costume Institute’s new exhibition and its changing theme.

While this year’s theme and execution may have been lackluster compared to previous years, many looks simply blew others out of the water. Here is a ranking of my top five personal favorites from this year’s gala.

Starting in fifth place is Kendall Jenner, who wore a personalized sheer dress from Givenchy encrusted with crystals, complemented by a jewel-covered necklace. According to Amy De Klerk of Harper’s Bazaar, this look was inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s unforgettable dress from “My Fair Lady”.

Fourth place is Lupita Nyong’o, who rocked the red carpet in a Versace denim dress. The actress nailed the theme, as denim reigned as the staple fabric in American fashion.

Third place went to Jennifer Lopez, who stepped out in a Ralph Lauren ensemble. According to Harper’s Bazaar Tiffany Dodson, the look included “a studded bracelet and belt, a beaded brown dress and a faux fur jacket.”

The finalist is a two-for-one, as Stephen and Ayesha Curry made their Met Gala debut. The powerful couple lit up the red carpet as Ayesha stunned in an intricate dress crafted by Atelier Versace and covered in dazzling details, while Stephen wore a simple black suit with gold embellishments.

The first place goes to the iconic model Iman. The timeless beauty dropped jaws as she set the red carpet on fire in a Harris Reed collaboration with Dolce and Gabbana. According to Amy de Klerk of Harper’s Bazaar, “the model wore a completely handmade crinoline and gold leaf dress, a jacquard bustier and flares, with a huge hat that Reed created in collaboration with Vivienne Lake.”

Other celebrities who turned heads included Kim Kardashian-West, who wore everything black Balenciaga from head to toe, making herself unrecognizable. Teyana Taylor showed up in a silver gown with cutouts and an exaggerated train from Prabal Gurung, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez caused a major uproar as she wore a white gown with tall red letters on the back indicating “Tax the Rich”.

Ocasio-Cortez sent social media into a frenzy as many questioned the intention behind her dress as she attended an event that was inundated with wealthy people. Despite the MP’s controversial dress choice, her look reflected her take on the theme and American politics, even if she literally had to spell it.

While some people may criticize this event as a bit pretentious, it is clear that the Met Gala is one of the most talked about parties of the year. For a few short hours, we were able to escape our daily studies to have the opportunity to indulge in one of the biggest parties in fashion.
